The Glock 42 is the smallest GLOCK possible with ultra-compact dimensions and easy-to-shoot features. It features Glock's Safe Action system, which ensures a constant trigger pull from the first round to the end. Three automatic independently operating mechanical safeties are built into the pistol's fire control system. All three safety blocks are disengaged sequentially as soon as the trigger is pulled and are automatically re-engaged when the trigger is released. The frame is made of polymer reinforced steel guides. It has an ideal grip angle and low weight. The slide stop lever and magazine catch are easily operated with the shooting hand. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a G42 from a friend at a local gun shop, High Mountain Hunting Supply. The Borrower came with limited ammo, and virtually every source in town sold .380 assault rifles, except for expensive defense scents. Although my shooting time was somewhat short due to the availability of ammunition, I was able to appreciate the size and shape of the weapon. I've found that not only is the frame pleasantly slimmer than every other Glock I've held, but the contours of the rear and front grips are more comfortable. The trigger of the G42 does not have trigger pulls like other Glocks and the blade is narrower. That's where the positives stop for me, as is everything about the G42 that I found unsatisfying.

The trigger was a beast that felt closer to 8-10 pounds than the advertised 5.5 pounds. It was stubborn and needed more pressure to get the break. I can't tell if this applies to all G42s or just this one, but it was very annoying and made it difficult to place an accurate shot. Recoil itself is felt with round nose 90gr rounds. I had some feeding issues, but with limited ammo for the session, I couldn't determine if it was a magazine, ammo, or rifle issue. Reading other internet reviews, it seems feeding issues are not uncommon. Most Glock seat experts will write "you're just cocking" or "your thumbs are touching the slide, preventing recoil". I suspect it's either the dual recoil springs (sound familiar, Gen 4 owners?) or the ammo, or a combination of both.

I brought the G26 Gen3 for comparison as Glock's previous flagship subcompact. 42 is slimmer in the width department at 24mm / 0.94 inches, but still slightly wider than the Keltec P3AT or Ruger LCP. The grip on the 42 is about the same length as the grip on the 26, which can still leave a pinky finger hanging in the wind for fellow mid-range shooters. The barrel is 3.25", and the capacity is only 6 rounds with standard factory magazines, which is quite common in pocket pistols of its class. The concave thumb recess of the frame has been replaced with a simple small ledge, and I realized that the smaller frame made sense and still felt that I could get a good buy every time.

Because of the trigger and feed issues with the G42, I was still able to shoot better with the G26. But it can increase to the time spent behind the trigger.

Overall, I think the Glock 42 is a good concept that should be further tested and developed to clear up some of the issues that many others have argued. Perhaps there was pressure from the sales/marketing departments for the 2014 SHOT Show release, which led to the questionable "perfection" of this model. Still, the G42 will fit a niche that seems to be growing every year as CCW permit holders grow and the market shifts to more comfortable single-stack CCW-centric models. The noise brought about a shortage of .380 autos and becoming as rare as the .22lr in my area at this point, I still personally prefer to keep a single stack of 9mm. However, for now, the G42 is hard to pass up and I encourage everyone to try it on for size. Just watch out for its flaws, lower your initial performance expectations, and just maybe the one you take home will work as it should.
